San Francisco

Today was my first day to take BART into San Francisco on this trip.   It was a drizzly, cold day but I bundled up and went anyway.   I got off at the Powell Street station so I could ride a cable car to Ghirardelli square.  On this drizzly day there wasn't even a line so I hopped right on.  I got off at the end of the line and went to the National Maritime Museum.    Entrance to all national parks is free this week and besides some interesting exhibits they have restrooms:)   After I wandered around there for a while, I headed over to Ghirardelli square and The Cannery.  Almost the first thing I saw was a cute little cupcake shop so I decided to "eat dessert first" today.  Not as many shops or people in this area as I remember.  Pier 39 is always a fun place even if it is touristy and I wanted to see if the seals had come back.  They have but it was much more impressive seeing them at Point Reyes.  I continued in the "super tourist" mode by having clam chowder in a bread bowl for lunch.   The trip back to the BART station was another ride on the cable car - this time I got lucky and sat outside.   There is lot of shopping in this area and I looked around Bloomingdale's but I was too tired to do it justice.  My plans are to head into the city about once a week while I am here to visit the different areas.  Union Square and Chinatown are two of the areas I would like to visit in the next couple of weeks.  One trip I am planning to visit Britex and Satin Moon - both well known fabric stores.  For my sewing friends, I sat next to a young woman on BART this morning that was reading a sewing book  She is just learning and will be checking us out on Pattern Review.

It sounds like such a fabulous day! It seems strange to see you in your jacket, it was almost 80 here today... How is the knitting coming?

Not only did I have a jacket on, I had on my "cuddleduds"!!! (long underwear). It was damp and cold-50ish??? Knitting is going "okay" - still make errors but I like it. Donna - Pattern Review is a popular sewing site. Chek it out at www.patternreview.com

I feel like I'm traveling vicariously with your descriptions and wonderful pictures, Peggy. I probably would have had my cuddleduds on, too -- SF weather can be fickle, cold and windy! I love your adventurous spirit.

Your blog entries make me remember how much I loved being a tourist in SF. It's been too long...

Another wonderful California day trip, albeit a chilly one. I have just loved each of your posts with detailed tourist sites described. This just sounds like a trip of a lifetime, and you are certainly making the most of each day. You are absolutely a woman to be admired.

I always thought the Nordstrom in SF was the best one. I remember going to their restaurant and getting a "Nordie Bar" to take back to the hotel. I also thought their shoe department was the best! It was the first Nordstrom I had ever been in. I hate to admit it, but I think the Houston store one pales in comparison to the others, especially customer service.
